A lot of people instantly connect the colour green with feelings of jealousy or sickness. But don’t let that put you off if you’ve recently been wondering about turning the most private and restful room in your entire home – the bedroom – into a fresh, green oasis.

Just like any other colour under the sun, green has its pros and cons. In the end, it’s all just a matter of deciding what it is you want to achieve (since it’s the bedroom we’re talking about, we’re going out on a limb and guessing a peaceful ambience and good night’s sleep is crucial for you?).

Let’s take a look at some popular ways in which you can (properly) decorate your bedroom with green, plus what Colour Psychology and Feng Shui has to say about this natural tone.

1. A green bedroom and Colour Therapy

Colour therapy, also known as ‘chromotherapy’, as been in use for centuries, but not all of us take this into account when playing interior designer. To make a long story short, each colour has its own unique ‘personality’, which helps us decide which colours (and hues) are more appropriate for which room.

Since green is related to nature, it has a soothing effect on both our minds and bodies. It is high on energy, stimulates healing and growth, and is an excellent choice for rejuvenating one’s body.

Green is also known as a ‘cool’ colour, like blue, but not quite as cold. It has the ability to be cheerful and playful depending on which colours it’s combined with, and it can just as easily be formal and elegant.

As it’s known for its calming qualities, green remains one of the best choices for bedrooms and home offices, where it can help to relieve stress. Green is also said to help with fertility issues, making it a popular tone for bedroom spaces.

2. A green bedroom and Feng Shui

The important thing to know about Feng Shui bedroom colours is what each colour creates energetically and what each tone represents. And similar to colour psychology, the tone you choose for your space can greatly affect your mood and lifestyle.

Luckily, Feng Shui also deems green an appropriate choice for the bedroom. It’s known as a soothing colour and represents the wood element in nature.

And apparently if a bedroom’s walls are painted green, a dash of pink or red can enhance a couple’s relationship.

3. Green bedroom ideas: Mix them up

Available in a wide variety of hues (from cheery chartreuse to moody juniper), green has the ability to flaunt just about any mood. And using various shades of green in your bedroom can result in a space with perfect visual balance. Just be sure not to overdo it, as the more colours you bring into a room the easier it is to look cluttered.

We recommend opting for a paler green on the walls (such as pistachio or a soft lime), and then pairing it with darker greens for your accents (i.e. scatter cushions in basil green and a headboard upholstered in a nice sage).

Remember to include two or three patterns to further differentiate those greens from one another plus flaunt some character / detail.

4. Green bedroom ideas: Go with white furnishings

Just because you’ve painted your bedroom walls green (or stuck green wallpaper on them) doesn’t mean you need to repeat this natural colour anywhere else. In fact, having only your walls in green can be a great way of accentuating this tone, especially if the majority of your furniture and décor is in a subtle white or off-white.

5. Green bedroom ideas: Pair peppermint with light-coloured ceilings

To make a room seem bigger than it actually is, go with light colours for the walls – and that includes your greens. We recommend sticking to a soft peppermint or dusty seafoam for the walls, but stop painting when you reach the ceiling – leave that in a pure white to give the room an even more spacious appearance.

6. Green bedroom ideas: Bring in pink for a feminine vibe

Here on homify we’re not big fans of the suggestion that pink is only for girls and blue is exclusively for boys. Even little girls can fall in love with green, especially the softer, more nautical hues like seafoam and tea green.

But if you want to ensure a touch of femininity, then we firmly support the idea of reverting back to the “girlish” colour of pink. So by all means: pair up an overall-green bedroom with a few pink accessories (like a bubblegum pink headboard, a ballet slipper pink rug, or a bookcase in taffy pink) and see how that green becomes the perfect background colour.

7. Green bedroom ideas: Contrast with dark floors

Hardwood floors can be perfect for any room, but placed in a bedroom with green walls will make it look like it was designed by Mother Nature herself. That is because the freshness of the green will immediately complement the warm, inviting look of the wood, as it’s a colour combination found in nature – just think of lush forests!

Feel free to further balance out this beautiful combo by tipping the scales slightly more in the direction of green (by choosing green décor and accessories) or warm wood (by opting for more wooden furnishings).

8. Green bedroom ideas: Perfect in small doses

Not sure you’re ready to commit to a full-on green bedroom? That’s the beauty of accessories, for it allows you to bring as much or as little of a certain colour into a space as you wish.

Keep that green look simple and subtle by letting it be one of the complementary colours in your bedroom instead of the dominating tone. A focal wall behind your bed; a decal sticker over in the corner; curtains or drapes in front of your window; a green motif on your otherwise-white floor rug; fresh potted plants and flowers on your nightstand or windowsill, etc.
