Summer is upon and for most that means enjoying time outside, cooking with the freshest of ingredients and more socializing.  It also means more time outside in a perfect environment for exercising. If you're looking to get in shape and you work from home, or if you find yourself taking care of the home and feel as though you have limited time to exercise, we have some great tips just for you!

There are plenty of ways to create a more fit and healthy lifestyle for yourself right at home. This can include supplying yourself with fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs on your balcony for healthy food, creating an at-home gym or exercise area for yoga and meditation or making sure that you're giving yourself a break from couch/chair/desk and getting outside for a walk once a day.

Below we have some great tips to get you fit in time for summer – and best of all, these tips reduce stress, inspire lifestyle changes (rather than fad diets and exercise plans) and will make you a happier individual for you and those you love! Get outside and get going!

Always use the stairs

Most homes, and especially buildings that we frequent are equipped with stairs. Although it's rare to have an elevator in your home, this isn't so rare in commercial complexes and offices.  However, we suggest you always leave elevators and escalators behind and take the stairs.  Stairs offer a great short burst of exercise and energy – working your leg and rear muscles.

Over time, test yourself – try going up and down your stairs faster each time and you will be able to tell the shape you're in by how quickly you lose your breath and gain it back! For added security, only go up and down stairs in proper shoes (not sandals or house shoes) to make sure you don't fall – or for the elderly, try carpeted stair coverings for both a great design technique and an added sense of security!

Don't stay long periods of time at the sofa or seated

As more and more of the population are working from home, this means not having to leave the comfort and security of your home – but it also means limiting your time outdoors. While cosy, this can have an impact on both your social life and your health.

Working from home offers great benefits for many and some studies have shown that working from home offers more happiness and lower stress levels than office/cubicle-style work environments. However, make a daily reminder for yourself to get out of the office, off the sofa and out of the house! Sitting for long periods of time can cause joint and back pain that can take days, if not weeks to properly repair. Make a point to set a schedule like those working in an office-style environment: go out for lunch for one or two hours, wake up early to get in a brisk walk, or take time before dinner to go out and relax on the balcony before preparing dinner!

Be active (clean your house, cook, organize your clothes)

Some studies claim that cleaning your home for two to three hours can burn just as many calories as a 30-minute jog.  This is great news for those of you taking care of your home 24/7 and also brings the benefits of a cleaner space afterwards.

Pick a few days a week or take a few hours each day to organize your living space: laundry, dirty dishes, organising your clothes and vacuuming are just a few of the options you have.  The more you clean and the larger the items that you move, the more calories you can burn in a shorter amount of time.

The greatest benefit to this (besides an active lifestyle, of course) is that you have a clean home that will make for a happy and organised living environment. Check out these storage options to inspire a new way of living clean, in more ways than one!

Go to the basement and organise everything

Basements are typically trouble spaces and can lead to many homeowners over-collecting items they don't need or storing items which could be sold or given away.  Don't let this happen to you! Yes, a basement is an added plus for storage and things  you want to use seasonally, but when it's time to move or to find older items you might need, this can be a huge pain!

Properly organizing a basement should generally take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks and should be a slow and gradual process.  First, separate items you want to keep, from those that you don't and sell them or give them away. Next, properly organize, group and label the rest of the items.  It is a true benefit to give everything a proper storage place – trust us, you won't regret it later!

You never know, cleaning and removing items from your basement could offer you the opportunity to add another room to your living space. Check out this basement living room here!

Do exercises on the floor

Most homeowners aren't blessed with a proper in-home gym – but hey, that never stopped anyone! You should know by now that you don't need expensive equipment and heated towels for a proper work-out area.

Clear out a space that is yours on a daily basis for either exercising, yoga or meditation. All you really need is a space that is large enough to situate your body comfortably, and clear away any items that that are valuable or extremely breakable. In this area, keep a few clean towels for sweat, a few bottles of water and maybe a yoga mat to make the floor a little more comfortable. It's also beneficial to keep hand and ankle weights, jump ropes and resistance bands nearby in a storage unity if you want to get a harder workout in!

If you have a spare room or hobby room, take the time to turn it into a proper work out or yoga room. This doesn't have to cost money or require installation – just check out this great exercise room which has the essentials for getting in a great work out!

Use your balcony or garden to do some exercise

If you have a balcony or garden and you're already using it for socializing and proper gardening and planting – then we congratulate you! You're already on your way to a healthier and more well-rounded lifestyle!

However, why not add more functionality to this space by using it as a proper workout and exercise area.  Even if you feel you don't have time for a full workout, getting outside and doing a few minutes of stretching will make you feel relieved and ready to start the day.  If you have a balcony with limited space then clear out a small area to do some breathing and stretching exercises and keep your workouts indoors with the door and windows open for that perfect open-air feel!
