It’s happened to most of us: you’re standing there, with a paintbrush in your hand, and you’re not quite sure what colour to pick for your living room / kitchen / study / house’s exterior façade… And remembering quotes, like the one by colour expert Amy Wax who stated that “colour is the backbone of design”, might make the process of sifting between tints even more stressful, because let’s face it: colour has the power to instantly transform any space, whether it’s on a wall, the floor, a sofa cushion, a lampshade, or even as part of garden décor.

But the good thing about colour experts, Interior Designers, and other pros is that they continuously update us on what’s hot and what’s not, including the best (and worst) colours to use for our homes.

And seeing as we’re nearing the end of 2019, we’ve been blessed with the knowledge of which colours are considered the trendiest for interiors thus far.

These are sure to help make your trip to the paint store so much quicker and easier…

1. Coral

Officially regarded as Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year, Living Coral has been warming up everything from living room walls to bedroom scatter cushions since late 2018. What makes this popular colour even more appealing is that you can lean more towards either its orange or pink tints, depending on the look of the space you’re styling up.

2. Olive Green

Olive Green has always been quite timeless, yet 2019 saw this moody colour being embraced like never before. It’s natural, yet not too lush. It’s peaceful and serene, yet still evokes a strong sense of luxury. Even better is that it can be paired up with so many other hues to make it become more prominent, like whites, silvers, or baby blue, etc.

3. Neutrals with blue touches

Neutral colours will never go out of style, but in 2019 we’ve discovered that mixing them with pops of blue can make for the perfect accent spot in a variety of spaces. A powder-white wall with a rich-blue sofa in front of it? Stone-grey bed linen with sky-blue pillows? No matter, pairing up subtle neutrals (that show off a room’s furnishings and textures) with cooler (and deeper) blues is the ideal way of highlighting an accent spot or two.

4. Hazelnut

Beige used to be king, then it was Mocha and other coffee-tinted colours that reigned supreme in modern spaces. But Hazelnut proved to be one of the more popular earthy hues in 2019, due to a variety of reasons:

• It doesn’t clash with any other colour

• It lends a touch of warmth to a space

• It perfectly catches the light from windows and fixtures to brighten up a room.

5. Muted pastels

Once upon a time, pastels were exclusive to nurseries and toddlers’ playpens, but how times have changed! Add a muted tone to that appealing colour, and you’ve got yourself an understated vibe that’s ideal for more grown-up spaces like kitchens, bathrooms, even hallways. Adding to their versatility is the fact that muted pastels also help to conceal those scuff marks and nicks that show up on walls.

And 2019 also taught us that muted pastels can warm up a minimalist design via a simple focal wall / backdrop (such as Carrot, Pomegranate, Alizarin, or a wealth of other soft warm hues).

6. Greys

Like the other neutrals, grey is available in many different tints, ranging from warmer hues (think Mouse, Mushroom, Ash) to cooler ones (like Steel, Lava, Fossil). And let's not forget the brilliantly darker ones for when some moodiness is wanted for an elegant backdrop, like Charcoal or Iron.

No, 2019 didn’t deliver any new grey colours (so far), but the year has definitely reaffirmed the stylish flexibility of this timeless classic.

Speaking of painting perfectly, let’s see what to do when it comes to Matching bedroom colour to your child's personality!
