Based in London, 4D Studio Architects and Interior Designers is known as one of the UK’s most established and seasoned architectural / interior design experts. With first-class homes as the area of expertise, 4D Studio consists of highly qualified professionals each bringing their own unique skills and backgrounds to every project. That much is evidenced by the team’s portfolio detailing various high-style designs and spaces.

In addition, cutting-edge technology forms part of the firm’s day-to-day workings, enhancing the already impressive list of available services the company offers clients (which includes residential architecture, interior design, new builds, renovations, finalising home extensions, and much more).

Today, we get inspired by some of 4D Studio’s past kitchen designs while glancing at some kitchen-design trends which have proven to be very popular in 2020.

1. Kitchens get smarter

Still very much the heart of the home, today’s modern kitchens are all about the latest technology integrated into nearly every function and appliance. That’s also the reason why so many kitchens these days are built from the ground up. For older ones, sensors, smart gadgets and other devices can be added as needed.

So, what does a smart kitchen do? Well, its motion sense-equipped faucets can sense the presence of hands underneath and will open automatically (or just via a simple touch). Its fridge can alert you as soon as groceries start running low (or go bad). Your coffee maker can be programmed to have a cup ready as soon as you wake up. And so much more…

2. Cabinet colours are going darker

Not that we don’t love a shiny white kitchen, but 2020 seems to be telling us that an overdose of light neutral hues in cooking spaces are on the way out. This is evidenced by so many coloured islands popping up to break that all-white kitchen look (and immediately ensuring some extra elegance).

Those wishing to bring in more tones are advised to consider blue- and green shades, as well as dark jewel tones like black or plum.

3. More and more streamlined designs

With our lifestyles seemingly getting busier and busier, kitchen-design trends have opted to go the other way: more simplistic styles and cleaner lines. One of the ways in which existing kitchens are “toning it down” is by removing upper wall cabinets to make the cooking zone appear larger and brighter.

But don’t deem ‘streamlined’ as ‘dull’. Keep it interesting by bringing in some texture. For open shelving, for instance, rough-cut wood can ensure a raw, natural look. Or how about metal tubing for a more industrial vibe?

4. Clever and creative storage solutions

Your kitchen design will never be groundbreaking if it’s inadequate in terms of storage solutions. To counteract the potential for clutter, homeowners and designers continue to look for new ways to enhance kitchen cabinetry.

And some of the most popular ways in 2020 include: drawer divides for cutlery and utensils; pull-outs for your spice collections; tray dividers; kitchen carts / islands with built-in cubbies and drawers.

5. Ceramic floor tiling

Love a beautiful wooden floor, but don’t have the necessary budget? Thanks to ceramic tiling (and technology), mimicking some good wood is easier and trendier than ever before. And this year, especially, we have seen more and more ceramic tiles designed to look exactly like hardwood floors (most popular for kitchens and living rooms) and natural stone (preferred by most for bathrooms and patios).

6. Connecting with the outdoors

What better time to invite Mother Nature indoors than summer? More and more homeowners are connecting their kitchens to outdoor patios or gardens, or adding entry points from their cooking zones to outdoor entertainment / socialising spaces.

Glass doors, especially, has seen a rise in popularity due to this trend, but so have oversized windows used to replace those tiny ones hovering above sinks.

If, for some reason, there is no way to add some extra garden views or natural light to your existing kitchen, we recommend being inspired by nature for your décor. How about a botanical print or two against those walls? Or potted plants on a floating shelf and the windowsill? Or floral patterns on your window treatment and upholstered island chairs?
