Open floor plans are on the rise in the architectural community, and with good reason – they are both fashionable and practical in that they allow free flow of communication and energy, and they allow the entire space to be more easily controlled in terms of temperature and interior style. Yet with all of this in mind, there are certainly many good reasons why we might want to add room dividers in these spaces. Room dividers offer more space definition without taking away from the openness of the home

If you're interested in incorporating a room divider into your home, you've come to the right place, because we are going to share a few simple steps on how to build the perfect room divider for your space. With proper planning and the right tools, you too can transform your open floor plan area into a compartmentalized yet extensive oasis!

Why have a room divider?

You may think that a room divider in an open floor plan space is a bit counterproductive. After all, what you want in an open floor plan is exactly that – an open floor. But with most room dividers, you can still maintain that open space while also defining each element in it.

Dividers can make a room feel more unified, add character to the home, and also help to create a bit more privacy in your space. As we can see here, this stone fireplace acts as a divider between the living room and the dining area. The stone complements the interior design perfectly and adds a humble charm.

Draw up a plan

Naturally the first step in this process is to draw up a plan that will fit not only to your home's interior design scheme, but also not compromise the functionality of the space. You might not need a room divider that reaches from floor to ceiling to adequately separate your spaces.

Take this room, for example. A low-lying wall is enough to separate the kitchen from the dining area and living room. We still have an open flow of communication. The small wall merely aids in the visual distinction.

Source your materials

Room dividers can be made from many materials. In addition to fire places and brick or plaster walls, plants, shelves, or railings can be used as room dividers. But no matter what your material of choice is, you need to source your materials.

Any local hardware store will have all of the necessary materials you could dream of for this project. You could also take a look at our professionals! With free consultations and all prices readily available, you can easily source your materials on a budget.

Ready your tools

Having the right tools is the next step in the process. You will need different materials depending on what you are making your divider out of, but there are a few tools that everyone must have to start off with.

The first thing you need is some sort of measuring device–be it a ruler, yard stick, or measuring tape, you need to make sure you have your dimensions down pat before you build. If you're off in your measurements by even a centimetre, it can turn your beautiful idea into a lopsided reality.

You'll also need your average handyman tools – a hammer, nails, a screwdriver, and even a saw, as some of you may be building onto additional walls or tearing parts of your room down.

Isolating the room

Once you've made your plan, sourced your materials, and readied your tools, it's time to isolate the room! And as we can see from this image, room dividers don't have to be just one wall. When designing a space with low-lying dividers, you can provide your space with even more distinction when the walls encompass an area.

These two small partitions work in perfect harmony by enclosing the living room. With the small entry way between the walls, we haven't lost accessibility, but have gained visual distinction and even more space for decoration.

Avant-garde designs

Some of us don't want to go through all of the hassle of personally building a room divider out of stone or dry wall, but luckily there are tons of avant-garde designs that are easy to install.

A perfect example of this is the bookshelf room divider. This separation of space adds not only a quirky and retro vibe, but it's also a practical place to store your books and knick-knacks. Other design ideas include the Japanese-style shoji doors, curtains, or folding screens, just to name a few.
